Once again, Scott Boras showed that he can apparently get someone to do anything. He convinced the Yankees to sign former Rays closer Rafael Soriano for $35 million over 3 years to be their setup man.
Now, Soriano is a fine reliever and he led the AL in saves last season. But the Yankees have a closer - you may be familiar with him. The really odd thing is that GM Brian Cashman said a few days ago that he was unwilling to give up a number 1 pick to get Soriano. The reports in the media are that Hal and Hank Steinbrenner overruled Cashman and his plan to use Joba Chamberlain as Mariano Rivera's primary setup man.
Does this signal a bit of chaos in the Yankees front office? One can only hope, but if nothing else it proves that the Steinbrenner boys inherited more from their father than his baseball team.
One other thing this proves: it shows that Tampa Bay's management knows how to run a small market team. The Rays have lost a bunch of players they can no longer afford, but they now have 11 of the first 90 picks in the June draft. The only way the Rays are going to be able to continue to compete in the AL East is to keep the young, inexpensive talent flowing from their minor league system. They seem to have set themselves up well to keep that going.
