At the moment I'm watching 20 Greatest Games on MLB Network. They're on #18, game 5 of the 1980 NLCS between the Phillies and Astros. Keep in mind that the league championship series was a 5 game affair in those days. An epic game, which Philadelphia eventually won 8-7 in 10 innings, taking the pennant and going on to win their first ever World Series.
They showed a lot of low-def footage from this game. A few things I noticed about baseball in 1980:
- Lots of unfortunate haircuts on these players.
- I'm not sure if there's deterioration in the color quality of the footage or if Astroturf was really this color, but the carpet in the Astrodome looked more blue than green.
- Speaking of unfortunate, the Astros were wearing these rainbow uniforms in this game. I'm still wondering who thought those were a good idea. Did Nolan Ryan lose a bet?
- Three Hall of Famers in this game - Nolan Ryan, Joe Morgan (Houston) and Mike Schmidt (Phillies). Oh, and Pete Rose was on the Phillies as well.
- Howard Cosell was frakkin' awesome.
