I know this is a baseball blog, but I'm still getting over yesterday's extremely disappointing loss by the Patriots. What can you say? The Jets outplayed the Pats and deserved to win. Wait 'til next year.

At the moment I'm watching 20 Greatest Games on MLB Network. They're on #18, game 5 of the 1980 NLCS between the Phillies and Astros. Keep in mind that the league championship series was a 5 game affair in those days. An epic game, which Philadelphia eventually won 8-7 in 10 innings, taking the pennant and going on to win their first ever World Series.

They showed a lot of low-def footage from this game. A few things I noticed about baseball in 1980:

  • Lots of unfortunate haircuts on these players.
  • I'm not sure if there's deterioration in the color quality of the footage or if Astroturf was really this color, but the carpet in the Astrodome looked more blue than green.
  • Speaking of unfortunate, the Astros were wearing these rainbow uniforms in this game. I'm still wondering who thought those were a good idea. Did Nolan Ryan lose a bet?

  • Three Hall of Famers in this game - Nolan Ryan, Joe Morgan (Houston) and Mike Schmidt (Phillies). Oh, and Pete Rose was on the Phillies as well.
  • Howard Cosell was frakkin' awesome.
