Garza to Wrigleyville

I was glad to hear that the Rays traded Matt Garza to the Cubs. Garza has always pitched well against the Red Sox and won two games for Tampa Bay in the 2008 ALCS. I'm more than happy to have him out of the division.

The Rays are obviously in a rebuilding mode, having lost Garza, Carl Crawford, Carlos Pena and most of their bullpen. This trade makes a lot of sense for them as they got a nice haul of minor league players who could make an impact with the team in the next couple of years.

I think this trade makes less sense from a Cubs perspective. From the reports I have read, the Cubs have other players to replace these prospects in their farm system, but it seems to me that you trade a bunch of prospects for a top of the rotation pitcher when you are close to contending. It doesn't seem to me that Chicago is that close. The Cubs finished 12 games under .500 in 2010, 16 games behind the Cincinnati Reds.

Of course, it wouldn't exactly be the first time the Cubs have made a questionable trade. There's are reasons they haven't won a World Series in 102 years.
