I recently bought a book called The Baseball Fan's Bucket List: 162 Things You Must See, Do, Get & Experience Before You Die. It's written by the father and daughter team of Robert Santelli & Jenna Santelli. The book is pretty much described by the title, and it sounded like a fun read, and maybe would give me some ideas for things I haven't done.
An occasional feature here will be me going through the ideas in the book and talking about each one - what I think about them, if I have already done it, etc. I'm guessing I have already done a pretty decent percentage of these, so I can talk about my experiences as well. I'll do 3 or 4 of the items in the book per post, going from #162 to #1. Let's get started!
162. Visit Elysian Fields: This is the place where the first recorded baseball game was played in 1846 between the Knickerbocker Club and the New York Nine. It's no longer a field, but is located in what is now the middle of downtown Hoboken, NJ. Sounds like it would be fun to check out if I were in the area, but not something I would go out of my way for.
161. Read Elysian Fields Quarterly: A journal that gives ordinary fans a place to write on baseball-related topics, it appears that it hasn't been published, or it's website updated, in a couple of years. Too bad, because it sounds like a pretty cool publication. Of course, in this day and age any idiot with a computer and an Internet connection can start a blog (umm...), so maybe this kind of journal isn't quite as needed any more.
160. Catch a Mexican League game: It would be fun to do if I was in Mexico near a ballpark and had a local contact to go with, since my Spanish is pretty limited.
More next time!
